Even now this very question strikes a chord. Amidst the multitude of negative (and accurate reviews) of Netflix’s Iron Fist, one thing we forgot to consider was the affect that the garbage that is Danny Rand will have on The Defenders. That’s right, let’s not forget that scrawny Wonderbread Danny Rand is going to share the screen with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Matt Murdock. It’s a very real possibility that Danny will be the poison pill that ruins what would’ve been a fantastic Netflix series. First let me take a minute to address those who are in favor of Finn Jones/Danny Rand. You are absolutely in denial. It’s bad…it’s so bad. I made it to Episode 11 and I just called it quits. I found Danny to be infuriating and annoying. He didn’t resemble a hero at all and was a poor reflection of Iron Fist. He was whiny, unfocused and lacked charisma. The stories dragged on and the fight scenes pale in comparison to Daredevil. Lewis Tan should’ve been the Iron Fist. A vocal few are trying to defend this show for reasons unknown. It’s ok to hate a Marvel show, you’re not scaring away investors, and there will be plenty of more Marvel shows to come. So how will this affect The Defenders? First the bad news:
The bad news is that what was going to be an excellent Netflix series full of richly developed characters teaming up to take on an evil greater then themselves will now have to incorporate Finn Jones. His portrayal of an unheroic, frustrating, wet-blanket Iron Fist is going to drag the team down. Chemistry on screen was something that the producers forgot to consider when casting Finn. The lack of charisma from Finn’s portrayal is going to suck every scene dry. It is my hope that Danny will fade to the background and let the other three heroes take the lead. Danny leading the Defenders is a hard pill to swallow. If you watched Iron Fist, the last thing on your mind was “he’s gonna be a key leader in The Defenders.” This portrayal of Danny is that of a misguided lost soul that make perplexing and infuriating choices. He has no wit and lacks any sense of confidence. The entire season was like watching Homer going “d’oh!” on loop. The idea of him taking charge is frankly unbelievable and I pray it doesn’t happen. There are a few reasons for hope. The biggest is that this is literally a team effort. Hopefully, the compelling stories of JJ/MM/LC will make up for the totally vapid kung-fu master that lack any semblance of wisdom. Anytime there is a team-up, people’s interest levels are immediately peaked. Character interactions are fascinating. Who will lead the team? Will Luke/Jessica be impressed with the Daredevil? Will any of the three kick Danny’s ass? Please? Another reason for optimism is that this show is likely being crafted with great care. This is Netflix’s The Avengers. They’ve been building up to this moment for several years and likely have a carefully planned story. The showrunners have been carefully putting the pieces into place. If the pacing is good and the fight scenes are like that of Daredevil, then we should be able to tolerate Danny Rand. Finally, the showrunners can learn from Iron Fist. Filming just wrapped up as Iron Fist was released. It is my hope that the showrunners learn from their mistakes and adjust accordingly when editing the show. They’ll avoid slow scenes and bad fight sequences. Hopefully Danny takes a backseat and The Defenders is a success. Will Danny Rand ruin The Defenders? I certainly hope not. We'll just have to wait and see. Till next time! -AJ
